Conservation
Perfection Only Comes with Hard Work
The Cox family and our devoted staff care deeply for the reputation and the ability for Riverview Plantation. That is why we work hard year-round – to ensure that Riverview continues to offer the best in quail hunting and a truly elevated hunting experience. Part of that mission means that we must care for the lands that make up Riverview Plantation. Because without concerted conservation efforts, we would not offer the perfect quail habitat. And all those proven fields of cover may not teem with so many gamebirds season after season.
A Plan of Action
After generations of tending this land – known as the “Quail Capital of the World” – we have learned what makes for the best gamebird habitats. That is why, every year, our dedicated, year-round guides and employees undertake a concerted plan to conserve and protect this plantation and its environs – so that quail will continue to thrive here for generations to come.
What do these plans entail?
Controlled Burns
Every offseason, we perform a controlled burning of around 50% of the forest undergrowth around Riverview.
Trapping Program
Egg eating predators – such as raccoons, possums, skunks and the infamous armadillo – can do much to decrease the gamebird population. So, we hunt and trap to keep these predators at bay.
Producing Food Plots
We plant food plots so that our gamebirds do not have to stray in search of food sources. We currently only plant Pearl Millet, as it is resistant to the dreaded Texas Sugarcane Aphid which practically wiped out 70% of our feed patches some years ago.
Invasive Eradication
Invasive plant species can be just as destructive to native plants and animals as mammalian predators. For instance, briars. We do our best to eradicate any presence of this insidious foreign plant.
Clearing Paths
Our guides and employees also use heavy equipment to rework our woods roads networks, while also cleaning up a few places that provide quail with a little too much escape habitat.
