Our guides work hard to raise and train the dogs that we use for hunt parties throughout the season. We love our dogs, and we care for them as much as we care for each other – and you’ll see that respect and commitment displayed by how our dogs perform in the field. A good bird dog isn’t always easy to find, that’s why we raise them from birth here and make them an important part of our pursuit of the grand tradition of quail hunting.
Hunting Dogs

Safety Above All Else
As we said above, we love our dogs. We put a lot of work in with our companions, and that’s why we value their safety as much as our own and that of our guest’s. We emphasize firearm safety in all that we do, and we ask our guests to do the same around Riverview Plantation’s working dogs.
At Riverview Plantation, our trainers rely on several different breeds of pointers and setters, as well as English cocker spaniels. These breeds of dogs offer the perfect mix of temperament, understanding, flexibility, and utility for the varieties of tasks that we ask of them. Our dogs play an integral role in helping our guests to experience the perfect hunt, as they work to flush coveys and retrieve downed birds. There’s something invigorating and fulfilling about watching our dogs at work, and you will be impressed by the job they do in helping you to shoot your fill of this gamebird of the aristocracy.
Our guides aren’t just seasonal employees – many of them stay with Riverview Plantation year-round, and many of those that do take their time to raise and train our outstanding pack of bird hunting dogs. Great trainers make great dogs, and men like Andy Hay take considerable time and effort to help us to produce and utilize some of the best bird dogs you will ever see in action. These wonderful teams of guide and dogs are a big reason why Riverview’s wingshooting is some of the best in the South.
